dinner in - a lobster boil

When I imagined having guests stay with us on the East Coast, I imagined a beautiful guest room to put them up in, serving a large breakfast on the island, buffet style as people awoke, and at some point in their holiday, a trip out to the harbour just on the other side of the mountain. We'd show them the Bay, and how low the tides sink, and then we'd pop into the fish market before heading home with our prized lobsters. Later, as the sun was sinking, we'd open a bottle of wine and enjoy the adventure that is a lobster boil.

A lobster boil, for us at least, is such a fun experience to share. They're such interesting creatures and it's such an anticipation! Watching them turn bright red when boiling, then the mess of learning how to crack into them and all the laughs, it's really a lot of fun. And also delicious... So delicious! Having my sister and brother-in-law, and our four nephews, here for spring break was the perfect opportunity for all these things. A highlight was on one of our last evenings when we had a lobster boil. It was all I hoped it would be!

We might as well have taken the boys to the aquarium! It's so much fun watching them admire the lobsters and be able see them up close.

Of course, something as special as a lobster boil deserves it's own special table! And really, it just adds to the whole experience.

For the place settings this time I used some oval ironstone plates as they fit the lobster perfectly. Then a napkin, which is very much needed when one enjoys lobster! A nautical bread plate just felt like an obvious addition and a couple other interesting pieces, like little saucers my sister gave me and tiny bamboo cocktail forks which worked well for dipping pieces of lobster in the clarified butter.

The runner was from Target, on clearance last fall, and I snagged it for under $5.

I also used some copper pieces as they work well with the aged clay pots. This little saucepan was for warming the clarified butter and the medium pot worked perfectly for an wine bucket.

We also opened a bottle of a new favourite wine - Nova 7 from a local winery, Benjamin Bridge.

And obviously, with things as they are, I wasn't able to grab any cut flowers anywhere, but the grocery shop did have one potted pink Hyacinth (that wasn't completely blown open), and a mini white Begonia. They've been sitting on my island, but they livened up the table enough.

These aren't our usual chairs - they're actually our patio chairs - but we've been using them inside this week as there were twelve of us for meals!

My sister found a stack of these sweet little scalloped saucers with a tiny blue print at a thrift store. They work perfectly with Jenny's blue block print napkins. She also found these shallow blue and white bowls at the same time as the others and there are also matching saucers. These worked perfectly for the chowder she made to enjoy while the lobsters steamed. It was beyond! (It may have had something to do with it essentially being seafood poached in whipping cream and butter.)

And this sweet shell was from my nephew. He found it at the harbour and gave it to me especially because it was all white. He was thrilled when I showed him my collection of special shells from all of our favourite beach trips, and then tucked it amongst the others. Here it worked perfectly as a little salt dish.

All the dishes set out ahead of time - a lovely mix of blue and white.

Two large, two pound lobsters were perfect for the four of us.

The novelty of this is so not lost on us! We're always just as excited as anyone else we're sharing it with. The fact that we can drive 15 minutes to the Bay of Fundy to pick out freshly caught lobsters is still so surreal.

A Birthday Dinner

This weekend was my mother-in-law's birthday.

Each year, as a gift, I make us all a dinner - a four course dinner.

I love to cook. I love reading cookbooks and planning menus and the shopping and prepping and the setting the table. I love making the meal and enjoying it with them.

And so, it's become a tradition.

This is what was served this year:

Seared Diver Scallops with Parsnip Apple Puree and Crispy Bacon

Beef Tenderloin with King Crab Claws, Mash, Roasted Brussel Sprouts with Bacon and Toasted Walnuts and Corn Pudding

Trio of Cheeses:
3 Year Cheddar with Apple, Gorgonzola with Pear and Pecans, and a Honey Pistachio Goat's Cheese Truffle

Molten Chocolate Cake with Macerated Blackberries and Vanilla Whipped Cream
French Macarons:
Chocolate, Coffee, Vanilla and Raspberry

Each course was paired with a wine.

It was a lovely evening. When dinner is served in courses, it just makes for a long, relaxing night. It gives lots of time to savour each course, and enjoy the company.

Of course it's a little harder to do all that while cooking... But it's still lots of fun.

I had spent the morning helping my parents move in to their new place (lots more of that to come!), and was busy painting. So, by the time I got home, I needed to get started cooking and didn't have much time to take many photos of our table. But, I did manage to get a few.

I didn't do anything too crazy, but I did make her an arrangement. Yellows, greens and whites are her favourite so I used some beautiful yellow Roses, with green Hydrangeas, white Tulips and even some young white Hyacinth's.

We all had a wonderful night.

Happy Birthday Mom!

An Easter Dinner and A New Buffet

I hope you all enjoyed a lovely Easter weekend.

We had a wonderful time hosting dinner on Good Friday for both sides of our family.

Our family is a huge part of our lives. We're blessed to be so close, in both distance and relationship. It's something we are always thankful for.

But most importantly, we're thankful for the grace and love of a Saviour who bore our sins, died for us, defeated death and rose again so we can have eternal life.

The Lilies are still blooming and fill the whole house with the most beautiful aroma. I added a few Pussy Willow branches and some bits of Grape Vine to make the arrangement a little more natural and whimsical. It went well with the natural elements like the blown quail eggs and found nests from a previous post.

I picked up this gorgeous buffet from an auction a couple weekends ago. It's stunning. It's dark and in perfect condition. It's got beautiful carved details and adds warmth against the white walls.

My collection of ironstone pitchers has grown by a few pieces so I grouped them together on my china cabinet.

The boys enjoyed an Easter egg hunt... Though Willen was the only one old enough to actual find and eat the hidden treats. Luckily he had lots of help though!

Levi is getting so big. Getting a smile out of him is exhausting, but this look is just as cute!

The boys are getting so big. Hudson is crawling around, pulling himself up to explore and copying everything his big brother does.

A Birthday Dinner

Last weekend, in celebration of my mother in law's birthday, I decided to throw a small dinner party.

It's not often I get to cook dinner for her, so when the occasion does arise, I try to make it a special one.

It's been a while since I've been able to enjoy a glass of wine, so bottles over the past year and a half have been collecting in our cellar. I thought this was the perfect occasion to dust a couple off and enjoy them.

I paired each course with a local wine.

Seared Diver Scallops with Pancetta, Garlic Aioli and Parmesan Tulles
 2010 Trius Dry Riesling

Pork Chop with Garlic Mash and French Beans
2009 Hillbrand Showcase Pinot Noir

Artisan Cheese
(Brie, Bella Vitano and English Stilton with Pear, Grapes and Crisps)
2007 Peller Estates Private Reserve Icewine

Chocolate Cake Three Ways

Needing to seat six, I had to move out our little pedestal table and use our desk for the evening. It worked perfectly.

I kept the table simple for lack of extra space.

For dessert, I decided to do chocolate cake three ways. This was her chocolate cake with Swiss buttercream.

I also did chocolate cupcakes with chocolate buttercream and white chocolate-dipped chocolate cake pops.

Happy Birthday Mom!
